one month

the recent reload of my metro card reminded me that i have been in new york for one month. crazy how time flies. it really didn’t feel like it.
i’ve had a ball getting to know the city. finding my way around via subway, then following the blue dot on iphone until it stops at my destination. the food scene is overwhelming. as soon as i knock off a bookmark someone gives me 5 places to try. it will never end. i’m ok with that.
the way i “do things” is a little different here but i’m adjusting. ordering things on-line is seriously the way to go. my most recent purchase, cat litter. i’m serious. amazon has become my new best friend. i am in love with doing laundry. well, the way i do laundry. fluff & fold is life changing and worth the extra expense. giving cat a bath has to be the wort errand here i have come across. he has never minded a bath in his 10 years of life but this time was different. we made it through and the only injury i incurred was a scratch that was not done with the intention to harm me. i think he may just live life as a dingy city cat. we shall see.
i have seen four people from home during this first moth and made two new friends. first cali rendezvous was with ian. i ventured out to the lower east side and spent the afternoon hopping from one place to the next. first stop was at a gallery to see our friends cody’s work. next was lunch at a random find via yelp. last was a cannoli from the famed ferrara that i was told by ed, chris, and rich that i just had to go to. even though it was hot as hell, it was a great day in the city with a friend from home.

next visitor was my dear corgan freeman. oh how i missed him so. his response, it’s only been three weeks. we had a ball. we had a lovely grown-up fancy dinner at one if by land, two if by sea. he took me to my first broadway show where we saw “end of the rainbow” a tale of joots aka judy garland. the next day he swooped by my casa at the tip of the island and i showed him around my new hood. lunch in the city and then he was off. it was truly great to see him.

i was lucky that on my one month anniversary I had a jammed packed day with new and old friends. first, a few hours of my morning was spent with miguel whom i met while working at the point. i knew before I left that he would be visiting ny so we made plans for his visit. miguel ended up meeting me in inwood as 30 years ago he used to live there! small world. we had a great afternoon walking around the neighborhood chatting. he showed me his old apartment there and if he still lived there, we would be neighbors by a block away.
next was a late afternoon meet up with todd, whom i also met working at the point. i swear, the people I met there and the friendships formed, was the best part about that job. todd moved to ny a few months before i did. so exciting for me that i would know at least one more person on this coast. todd lives in brooklyn so meeting up with him was my first venture there. easier to get to than i expected i was quite impressed with my journey there. it was really hard to choose where to go as i have so many brooklyn places bookmarked but we settled on the first place i bookmarked in brooklyn (the brooklyn star) and had a fantastic lunch. next was a walk around the neighborhood to a gelato shop to cool down from the summers heat. it was great to see todd and explore brooklyn.
after my afternoon in brooklyn, I headed back to the city and met up with ariel. we went to din and then met up with her friend chris and cheersed to my one month with some well crafted cocktails. all in all, it was a great one month day in my new city.
work has been busy. still doing prep and working the front line. haven’t started my training on the grill yet. I’m ok with that as i’m not really looking forward to it. but then a part of me one day just wants to hop on with the gist of it that i do know and start the process and get it done with.

4th of july was awesome. spent the day in brooklyn and then we went to jersey, hoboken to be exact, and watched the fireworks with the city as its backdrop. it was lovely.

the weather, hot and humid, makes me miss home everyday.
see you in october california!
